4 – Under your wings

Leaving the place of birth and infancy of the east, we enter the phase of growing up, leaving the field of mother (and father), getting interested in the world around us. The text comes from the Hebrew morning prayers, the melody is my own.

mah yakar chasdecha elohim
u-veney adam b’tzel kenafecha yechasayun

how sweet is your kindness, creator
mankind finds protection under your wings

After the first series of morning prayers, at some point adults put a prayer shawl or tallit over their shoulders before they continue with the next series of blessings and prayers. There are several mystical and cabalistic meditations connected with this ritual act. In the image I used for the CD, the white tallit we wrap around us is seen as the wings of angels that cover us in protection.
The drum sounds stimulating and creates an up-beat optimistic rhythm. I imagined a child, exploring the world but often running back to mother and father to tell something and to get a word of encouragement. Feeling big one moment and small another, knowing there is a supportive place to return to.
Sounds of a creek sweet water are added: the river of life, flowing forwards.
