The track before this one, Summer walk, was about the relaxation we experience when everything in life is working well and everything is kind of easy. Now we enter the west, and we continue to mature. We are learning the lessons of life, and not all of them are pleasant. The west is connected to many things, for example to inner strength and dreaming, but it is also connected to loss. We always have to leave things behind. Sometimes we choose it: we decide to clean up, to drop something, or to change our ways of life. Sometimes we are forced to deal with loss we would not choose ourselves: a partner leaves us, a loved one dies, we loose our health because of an accident or illness. One way or another, we have to find ways to deal with such losses.
This melody expresses that loss brings sadness, but as we do not turn away from it, the loss can slowly turn into a gift we take with us into the next phase of life. When we are dealing with loss, for a moment it is as if our foundations are less secure and stable, so we added sounds the earth makes when it moves: lava flows, earthquakes and avalanches. Added are lightning and thunder: the sounds of disruption. These sounds of instability and change however have a promise in them: lava creates very fertile earth, thunder and lightning bring life giving rain.
